Fine Gael has selected a four man ticket to contest the seven seats in the newly expanded Castlebar electoral area in the Mayo County Council elections this June. The incumbent councillors Henry Kenny and Cyril Burke will be joined on the ticket by Castlebar Town Councillor Eugene McCormack and Mayor Kevin Guthrie.

Cllr Al McDonnell led the tributes, saying: “I found him a very strong and direct man. If he made his mind up that was it, he was very fair, though, and didn’t take long to make his mind up. Mayo county councillors racked up more than €800K in six months

Figures released by Mayo County Council under the Freedom of Information Act have revealed that Mayo county councillors were paid out €836,212 from January to the end of June 2009, all relating to the six months pre-election. Independent Castlebar Councillor Frank Durcan who sought this information said that these figures are “immoral in the times that are in it”.
